What department do you work for, how long have you worked there and what is your current rank?

Clayton County Fire & Emergency Services, 5 years, Sgt. / Peachtree City Fire Rescue PT, 3 year, FF.

What other special skill/certifications/awards have you earned within the Fire Service?

Hazmat Tech, AEMT, FF 1, FF 2, FO 1, Advanced Extrication, Inland rescue swimmer. I have received medical life save and rescue of the year, rookie of the year awards.

Your Business Name and Classification:

Merry Mower LLC & Landscaping

What does your business offer and what sets you apart from “normal contractors”?

What Merry Mower can offer is that we are a true small business and we are not rushed like you might see with a larger landscaping company. We take our time to make sure every job is a good job and every customer is happy when we leave. Also one thing I love is that because we are so small, I as the owner am also still out there getting to know the customer and doing the work.

What is the job you are most proud of that you have done within your business?

I would have to say I am the most proud of when we were able to help an elderly couple who has not been able to maintain their property for 3 months or more. We were called and able to make the yard look beautiful. It did take two days but we got it done and the customer was happy when we left.

What is the funniest thing you have seen while doing an estimate or job?

Probably the funniest thing was when we were building a small fence to keep the deer out of a back yard as well keeping the dogs in. The first day we came of set the posts and placed the wire mesh on the post. When we came back the next day we noticed a deer had actually ran through the fence. The wire mesh was bent with a perfect indention of the head and the posts were out of alignment with and hair was everywhere.

Where do you see your Fire Department career in 5 years?

I see myself as a paramedic and completed all technical rescues disciplines.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?

In 5 years I do want to grow, right now I have about 15 clients and I would like to have 30 clients mixed between commercial and residential with a small crew that provides quality service.

What is the best advice you can offer a potential client looking for services like yours in your industry?

I would have to say know what you want and expect the best.

What is your why? (Why do you get up every day and go to the FD or your other job(s)?

I get up and go to fire department because it is the best job in the world. I love my brothers and sisters and we can all count of each other. The fire service has its ups and downs and can be very draining but I know my fire dept. family always has by back and keeps me going. Also when we get a fire it bonds crews together like nothing else by knowing you are surrounded by deadly conditions and your partner has you back through it all.

If you could change one thing in the business world, Fire Department or private sector, what would it be?

I would change that it has become okay to do just enough to get by. I have seen more and more firefighters only doing the minimum amount of work possible which is dangerous and potentially deadly. I believe that there is no place for mediocrity in the fire department. I expect my crew to give me and the citizens the best they can do and nothing less because that is what I give them.

Video Interview:

FireTrack Firefighters in Clayton County Ga for Lawn Maintenance

Mike Dingler: Hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of firefighter Friday. We're here with Mr Jonathan wobbles. Thanks for being on the show. All right. So basically, um, tell us a little bit about your fire department career first. Like, uh, where do you work currently? Where have you worked, how long have you been in the service?

J Wambles: So currently I'm with Clayton County fire and emergency services. I've been there for five years. I work part time Peachtree city. I've been there for two and a half.  I started out my career in PTC as an Explorer in high school and I went into becoming a volunteer and then I started at Clayton County. Now I work Clayton and Peachtree city, both.

Mike Dingler: So for the, the people on the app that aren't related to the fire service, the Explorer program, that's a what? 12 and up? Yeah, 16 and now it's 16 in that program.

J Wambles: For young high schoolers who want to get into the fire service and learn a little bit about it.

Mike Dingler: So you were there when you were 16. Yep. And that kinda gets, uh, gets you in the door as far as what we do as firefighters and stuff like that. So you went explorers and then volunteer and then Peachtree city. So your full time job, is it Peachtree city or Clayton right now? Clayton Clayton all right. What are you on mostly the fire truck or ambulance or what?

J Wambles: Well, it was on the ambulance for a while and I got my engineer and everything. So now I drive most of the time.

Mike Dingler: So you drive the firetruck and ladder truck, you drive the ladder truck?

J Wambles: I was assigned to a ladder and then I got promoted to Sergeant and I got assigned to an engine company.

Lawn Maintenance Peachtree City, Brooks, Fayetteville, Senoia, Sharpsburg, Meriwhether GA

Mike Dingler: Okay. And at Peachtree city, is your parttime getting a ambulance or fire truck or both? Both. They kind of rotate us pretty regularly. But besides me and full time at Clayton and , you know, half of the time on your days off you also do landscaping or I guess we could call it a lawn maintenance. There we go, lawn maintenance. So tell me about that career, what all you do with the lawn maintenance.

J Wambles: I started doing lawn maintenance about two years ago. Um, I started out actually when I was a kid with my stepfather who's also a fireman and I was just working with him, helping him out and saw there's a pretty good business to get into. So as soon as I started my career in the fire service, I started buying my own equipment and start my own business.  I'm pretty small right now, i've got about 15 customers looking to have 30 to 40.

Mike Dingler: So mainly residential. So if someone downloads the fire track app in the Google store or the app store for and request lawn maintenance under landscaping. And basically what do you do for them? Do you come out once every two weeks and do like grass cutting weed, eating, blowing? What, what all do your services include?

J Wambles: It's kind of a case to case basis. It depends on what the customer wants. If they want me to come out once a week, I can do that, um, or come out every two weeks. I can do that. That's majority of my customers every two weeks, every two weeks. Um, so basically when I come at like the basics is just a cut, a weed eat, blow and I edge the concrete stuff like that. Um, I do have the ability to, you know, trim hedges, bushes, uh, tree limbs and stuff like that. Okay.

Softscape, Pine Straw, Weed Eating, Grass Cutting Coweta Ga

Mike Dingler: What about a soft scape? Is that called soft skills? Soft skills. Okay. Pine straw side. So someone I'll fire track. They uh, they don't need a lawnmower after they find the right set. All right, so you come by once a week, once every two weeks, take care of all the grass cut and everything else. But you got 15 yards now that you take care of mostly every week and you're looking to get at least 15 more. Do you have any helpers or anybody does you? It's mainly just me. And, um, I kinda liked that cause I don't, cause I know that I'm going to do a good job every time. I want to make sure it's good. And I have, I have a feeling that you liked that too because you work 48 half of your career between two different fire departments and you probably like putting all those headphones that just go in and ride around as long loader and having your bike, I'll leave you alone.

Mike Dingler: Right? Yeah. Yeah. It's, it's very therapeutic. Our side jobs and something far away from fire and EMS on our days off. Um, that's the whole reason FireTrack exists is to make our, you know, clients and our public aware of what we do on our days off. So a lot of firefighters are into, uh, you know, doing the landscape thing and doing the, uh, the lawn maintenance thing. And I'd say pressure washers and lawn maintenance is probably, I'd say out of 100% total we each do about 40% of all firefighters side jobs between pressure washing houses and cutting grass and stuff like that for houses. So a lot of a lot of guys within the app will be able to take care of, you know, all of our customers. And I appreciate you being in the app and basically if they download the app, what zip codes do you serve?

Mike Dingler: So the is going to get an opportunity to put in their zip code of where they want their lawn to be maintained if their house. So what, what are we looking at? Um, gee, can you just tell me the counties.

Grass Cutting and Yard Maintenance in Harrelson, Meriwheterh, Senoia, Fayetteville, Coweta, Fayette, Clayton County Ga

Jonathan Wambles: Um, probably like Senoia and Harrelson and those areas. Probably Spalding.  50 mile radius from where we're sitting right here in Peachtree city. I work in Clayton, I drive through Fayette and I drive through Coweta and I live in Gay Georgia, which is in Meriwhether. Meriwether as well.Well, Hey man, I appreciate you. I call him Wambles but his real name's Jonathan. But in the fire service military, whenever we always used to call each other by our last name. So I will say for being on the show. Thanks. So in the FireTrack app, Merry Mowing LLC is in the app. Jonathan will take care of any kind of a landscaping needs that you may have as far as yard maintenance.  See you next time. Thanks for tuning in.
